The Hart House at the University of Toronto, Nestled on a Beautiful Campus, Is A Gorgeous Place to Tie the Knot

Request more pricing, details and info from this vendor! The St. George campus at the University of Toronto campus is well known for its beauty and distinguished buildings. Hence it is no surprise that the Hart House is right at home in the midst of this stunning setting.

Location, Location, Location

Hart House was built in 1919 in the theme of Gothic Revival architecture. There are two main spaces where you can host your reception. There is the Great Hall, which can hold a maximum of 280 people. It boasts a working fireplace and “Italian travertine marble” and you are within steps of the spacious outdoor quadrangle. If you are looking to host a smaller wedding, the Music and Debate Rooms on the second floor are great options. Not to worry, fireplaces, hardwood floors and vaulted ceilings more than make up for their smaller size. For even more intimate weddings or events, (25 people and under) there is the South Dining Room. It has a large wooden table ideal for a sit down dinner and windows with views of the Quadrangle. An advantage to getting married at Hart House is that if you opt out of holding your ceremony at the Great Hall there are several chapels of various denominations on campus providing viable options for a ceremony.

So I Want to Get Married at Hart House, Now What?

Once you have chosen Hart House for your wedding (and of course given your deposit to secure the date) you will be assigned a wedding coordinator. The event planner will help you with all aspects of your big day from theme and decor to wine selection and menu choices. All catering is done in house. The only thing you would have to be responsible for is supplying the wedding cake. Furthermore, the Hart House handles all liquor licenses as well as providing the tables, chairs and linens. Your wedding planner can also suggest a photographer (or you can certainly source one on your own) especially since you will definitely want to have your photos taken at Hart House. (Couples NOT having their wedding or reception at Hart House are not permitted to have wedding photos taken there.) If you want to take your photos on another area of campus you will need a permit. You or your wedding coordinator can contact the Office of Space Management at 416-978-2187 for additional information regarding cost and fees.

Things to Keep in Mind

The Hart House also offers a complimentary menu tasting for the bride and groom. But keep in mind that these tastings are done four times a year with other couples. If you are interested in serving a customized menu you will need to book a private tasting which is an additional cost. Also, Hart House is a cultural arts building and often has activities taking place there. The facility will do its best to make sure you are aware of any events so as to plan for parking and privacy. This is another area in which your coordinator can be very helpful.

Who gets Married at Hart House?

According to Stephanie Kern, the Event Manager, a variety of people get married at Hart House. There are of course alumnae, some of which are abroad, who choose to have their weddings there. In these instances the coordinator is key as much of the planning is done remotely via email. (You don’t need to have graduated from University of Toronto to book the venue.) Stephanie also finds that people who choose to host their weddings here are often in their late twenties and older. She says it is the “old world European feel and outdoor quad space that make the space quite unique” and popular with so many couples. Hart House also hosts an annual event for the Toronto International Film Festival garnering it a great deal of media attention and publicity.
