Plan Your Fabulous Local Wedding

Melissa and Stephan wanted a wedding that was beautiful but not over the top. With help from the Ancaster Mill (ancastermill.ca) and oh so gorgeous photos from Anne Edgar Photography (anneedgarphoto.com), we think they got exactly the right balance between natural beauty and classic modern. Check it out…

Ceremony & Reception Location: Ancaster Mill (ancastermill.ca)
We had heard great things about Pearle Hospitality and the amazing services they provide to couples on their wedding day. We were looking for somewhere that had the full package – both a ceremony and reception space, along with catering. We also needed somewhere that had availability on May 5th because we wanted to get married on our 11th anniversary. From the moment we arrived at the Ancaster Mill, we knew it was a special place and knew it would be a great fit for us. Plus it didn’t hurt that it was absolutely beautiful inside and out!” – M&S

Colour Palette
: Burgundy, Grey & Gold

Theme: “Didn’t have a theme necessarily, just wanted it to look beautiful without going over the top!” – M

Flowers: Jodi Leigh Designs (jodileighdesigns.com) “Lots of greenery with white and blush florals with pops of burgundy.” – M

Décor: Jodi Leigh Designs (jodileighdesigns.com) “Grey table runners, gold table numbers, a beautiful gold card box and about 700 candles haha!” – M

Fav décor element: “There were two large statement arrangements that we used both at the ceremony and reception. They were in gold urns and placed on an acrylic pedestal that made it look like they were floating.” – M

DIY: “Made the thank you tags for the tree sapling favours, but nothing else.” – M

Cake: Kiwi’s Cupcakes and Cakes (kiwiscupcakes.com) “Our cake/cupcake tower was really special! Kirstin from Kiwi’s Cupcakes and Cakes was absolutely amazing. We decided on four different cake/icing flavor combinations and she piped the icing in different textures. For the cake, it was a simple buttercream cake with fresh florals to accent. Our wood cake topper also featured a bulldog! We have had two bulldogs over the years so we had to find a way to incorporate them ;)” – M&S

Invitations/stationery: Minted (minted.com)

Wedding favours: Spruce Tree Saplings from Evergreen Memories (evergreenmemories.ca)

Groomsmen and Groom’s attire: Stars Men’s Shops (starsmenshops.com)

Bridesmaids attire and accessories: David’s Bridal (davidsbridal.ca)

Bride’s dress and accessories: Taylor’s Bridal (taylorsbridal.com)

DJ: Copeland DJ (copelanddj.ca)

Hair & Make-Up: Hair: Gen Cruz | Make-Up: Peachy Keen Studios (peachykeenstudio.ca)

Wedding Planner: “While we didn’t have an official wedding planner, The Mill’s Special Events Consultant, Rochelle Trask was amazing and was a huge help along the way! She made sure every detail of the day was written down – the day wouldn’t have gone as smoothly without her” – M&S

Photographer: Anne Edgar Photography (anneedgarphoto.com) “Anne was a recommended vendor on the Ancaster’s Mill vendor list. We saw that she had done many weddings at the Cambridge Mill (another Pearle venue) and had done a few in Ancaster as well. We knew we wanted someone who knew their stuff and was familiar with the area. When we met Anne, her professionalism was apparent right away! Her 20+ years in the business really made us feel comfortable that we were putting our photos in great hands. Both Anne and Carla were amazing to work with. I loved how Anne always made us ‘shake it off’ when we weren’t smiling genuinely anymore (your cheeks start to hurt after awhile!) and the way that she made everyone laugh so she could capture their real smiles. Overall, she just made us feel really comfortable and made sure that we still were able to enjoy ourselves.” -M&S

Biggest challenge:How to make it ‘us’. Weddings can become so cookie cutter so we really wanted to make it individual, especially with the music as we weren’t really into the typical wedding songs! I went on the hunt to find versions of rock songs that we could use in the ceremony. We eventually were able to find versions of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tragically Hip and Pearl Jam songs that were perfect – recognizable to those who knew the songs, but just sounded like nice songs to those who didn’t. Stephan really enjoyed that we were able to do that.” – M

Fav wedding memory: “Seeing all of our friends together in one place. Since we have been together so long, many people are ‘our’ friends rather than ‘my’ friends vs ‘his’ friends, so it was a reunion for them as well!” – M&S

Advice from one bride to another:
Do what you want despite what’s trending on Pintrest at the moment. Enjoy yourself and do NOT worry about the little things that no one else will notice but you. The biggest compliment was not that the flowers were amazing, or the food was great, but that it was a fun, relaxed atmosphere where everyone could enjoy themselves. In the end, that is what was most important for us.” – M&S
