Photo: Julie Broadbent Photography | Venue: The Gladstone Hotel

From the UK to Toronto! Laura and Christopher had an unforgettable wedding that incorporated lots of love that was evident in all of the DIY projects that they took on. With the Toronto skyline as their backdrop they had an amazing wedding day…

Bride &  Groom: Laura Dawson and Christopher Emms

Wedding Date: September 10th, 2016

Ceremony & Reception Location: Gladstone Hotel (gladstonehotel.com) “Having a city wedding is something that was important to us both. As we met on Queen Street in Toronto, we thought it would be perfect if we got married on Queen Street. The Gladstone is also an iconic Toronto landmark, so the mix of the historic venue of artistic inspired rooms was exactly what we were looking for. The Gladstone also catered the event, so the stress levels were at a minimum knowing most of the details were taken care of.” – L

Colour Palette: “Purple was our main colour theme and we tried to use different variations like a pastel colour palette, for example the bridesmaids all wore slightly different shades to retain their individuality whilst sticking to the theme. As green and purple pair nicely we utilised that in our flower selection so we had lots of green with purple accents.” – L

Flowers: The Rose Pros (therosepros.com) from Newmarket ON. “They supplied our flowers. I had a simple country style hand-tied bouquet with lilac, aubergine and moss-green flowers and greens. The flowers used were lilac roses, mini-cream roses, limonium and chrysanthemum tied in with burlap and lace ribbon. The hair crowns were a mix of mini white roses, limonium and baby’s breath whilst the centrepieces were Queens Anne’s lace, limonium, purple and white lisianthus. We tried to use wild flowers and those in season.” – L

Décor: “My mum and I did all the decor ourselves. We tried to stick to the rustic vibe, by stocking up on old vases, mason jars, lace and burlap.” – L

Fav décor element: “I really loved the green garland that ran down all of our banquet style tables. I wanted to add as much greenery as possible, as it meshed well with the exposed brick in the ballroom. We went for a rustic style day as The Gladstone already has some of those elements in place, such as the exposed brick wall, string bulb lighting and the hand-operated elevator. To pair with that we created burlap table runners.”- L

DIY: “The centerpieces, table numbers, backdrop for the ceremony, wedding favours, seating plan, even the bunting on our head table! It was an arts and crafts filled summer! Mainly, we got all our ideas off Pinterest, which were mainly successful. Hot glue guns are a lifesaver!” – L

Photographer: Julie Broadbent Photography (juliebroadbentphotography.com) “We chose Julie because she is a calming presence, there is no drama involved and she really set us at ease during a stressful day. She is casual but professional and easy to get along with. We didn’t have to direct her throughout the day, she knew exactly what we wanted. We couldn’t have had a better photographer! Not the mention how incredible the photos turned out. The photos with the Toronto skyline in view are our absolute favourites.” – L&C

Biggest Challenge: “The biggest challenge for us was planning the majority of the wedding from abroad as we were living in England. Also planning the seating arrangements was a bit of a headache!” – L

Fav wedding memory: “Having both of our families get together and sing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” was really special for us. We both have large families from Liverpool, so it was great to see everyone bond and have a laugh. Overall, we had a fabulous day!” – L&C

Advice from one bride to another: “It is never worth stressing over anything, no matter big or small. You won’t remember any of the big or little details, or what you think went wrong. Just relax and have fun! It’s the biggest party you’re going to throw, might as well make the most of it.” – L
