THEMUSEUM (♥)(themuseum.ca) wasn’t always a museum. At least, the physical building didn’t always hold world-class exhibitions and act as a venue for weddings… In fact, the building was originally built in 1925 to house Goudies Department Store. After Goudies closed, the building lay empty for roughly 12 years.
In 1995 a plan was put forward to open a museum in Downtown Kitchener. When the building was renovated and reopened as a museum, Downtown Kitchener began to see some revitalization. It presented a unique opportunity to preserve an old, well-known building within the community, and help maintain a sense of Kitchener’s history.
The building’s history is formally recognized within the street directly behind it: Goudies Lane. This small street was originally built to give delivery trucks direct access to the department store’s loading docks, but is one of the most popular spots for wedding party photos today.
Next time you visit THEMUSEUM, take a few moments to consider the history of the physical building, and let your imagination run wild envisioning creating your own memorable history in THEMUSEUM’s space.
