The Berkeley Field House: An 18th Century Stream, Two-Storey Treehouse and Landscaped Garden Deck Will Have You Wondering, “Am I Still in Toronto?”
The Berkeley Field House is a property with a 18th Century Stream, Two-Storey Treehouse and Landscaped Garden Deck that has you wondering, “Am I Still in Toronto?” In fact, when we heard the address of the venue was on Queen Street East we were puzzled. We had driven down that street countless times and don’t remember seeing anything that could be described as a charming wedding venue. But, like many people in the city, we soon discovered we just weren’t paying attention. Walking into The Field House and seeing the 18’ ceilings, exposed beams and the wall of glass French doors opening onto the garden deck, we couldn’t help but be impressed. It was a crisp winter day and we were eager to step outside and check out more of this “urban oasis.”
Breaking it Down
After booking the Field House you will be assigned a venue coordinator who will guide you through all the facets of planning your wedding. This is a creative venue with the primary goal of catering to couples’ creativity. The coordinator will also send you a 30 page planning manual so you can view preferred vendors and make selections. All catering is done in-house by the 5-star Berkeley Catering Company. They are known for their great, original menu and even the bread they use is baked on the premises!
While most people opt to host the ceremony outside on the Garden Deck, the main dining typically takes place inside the large dining room. Hanging antique chandeliers, a decorative stairway ideal for tea lights and crisp white walls will create a romantic atmosphere for your guests (150 max for sitdown) to enjoy their meal. The distressed wood doorways also make for great indoor photo opps. Outside on the Garden Deck is an area off to the side perfect for the ceremony and guest seating. The bride can walk down the aisle as the sounds of Taddle Creek runs through the garden area. Included in your booking is a 15 x 40 foot tent, with optional sides, set up pavilion style throughout the summer months. There is an additional lounge seating are, with lovely rattan furniture in a modern gazebo space, great for the cocktail hour.
Taddle Creek Lodge
One of the most unique aspects of the outdoor space is the two-storey treehouse, Taddle Creek Lodge. The space can accommodate up to 50 guests on the lower level and 10 guests on the upper deck. (A great option for people looking for something different for their small intimate reception as it is a great retreat for cocktails during the reception or perhaps for the groom and his party to get ready before the ceremony. It serves as just one more element of fun at this already distinct venue. Photography on the Garden Deck and inside the Lodge will no doubt be stunning!
Painting the Canvas, So to Speak
When we were visiting, the staff was setting up for a holiday party with candles, flower centerpieces (fresh orchids in a vase with floating tea lights) and lovely table-settings. We couldn’t really imagine the need to add anything more, particularly in the summer months with so much lush greenery. However, there have been some interesting requests. For one event a waterfall was actually brought in and the pillars in the dining room were made into trees to create a forest effect. The staff at the venue didn’t even bat an eye and were pleased to accommodate in any way they could. Many of their clients are very creative, living Downtown and have sought out the locale because it isn’t your typical banquet hall, providing them with the backdrop to make the space their own.
Patron of the Arts
Artists of all types have flocked to the Field House for various events. Nelly Furtado shot parts of her music video, Ron James held his wrap party here, and several commercials have been filmed at the venue.
