{review} Oak Bay Marine Group

Oak Bay Marine Group resorts host ceremonies, cocktails, photos, receptions & more in gorgeous, all-in-one oceanfront locations

Putting on spectacular weddings with exquisite food, excellent service and a backdrop that can’t be beat is what the Oak Bay Marine Group has been doing best for the past twenty years. In fact, OBMG offers two different locations for your wedding – couples can choose between the incredible Painter’s Lodge in Campbell River, and the breathtaking April Point Resort & Spa on Quadra Island.

Both world famous resorts feature an unparalleled ocean backdrop that provides amazing photo opps and dream-like ceremony locations that are especially ideal for nature lovers.

This destination-style getaway is also a favourite for wedding guests, as they spend the weekend celebrating, exploring and enjoying some of the many resort activities like fishing, whale watching and golf.

Here’s more on both incredible locations…

Two wedding worthy properties

When Bob Wright first started The Oak Bay Marine Group over fifty years ago, he never could have imagined that his small business overseeing one marina would grown into an ever-expanding company that includes a variety of marinas, attractions and resorts.

Today, two of OBMG’s highly popular resorts, Painter’s Lodge and April Point Resort and Spa, play host to a large number of weddings each year. Says Travis Fleming, Social Media and Creative Content Coordinator for OBMG, “With our great locations and amazing views of the ocean, it only seemed natural to expand our business to include weddings.”

Both Painter’s Lodge and April Point have hosted countless weddings for the past twenty years. To give you an idea, Painter’s Lodge held sixteen weddings during the last wedding season while April Point hosted eleven. The resorts open their doors for weddings each spring and OBMG anticipates another busy 2014 wedding season.

For the team at OBMG, hosting happy couples as they say ‘I do’ never gets old. Travis explains, “It doesn’t matter how many times we do this, it’s always a great honour to host someone’s wedding. But most of all, we keep doing this to see the smiles on the happy couple’s faces. Your wedding is one of the biggest days of your life, and we love making sure everything is just how you imagined it.”

Oceanfront ‘I do’s’

Although OBMG has hosted all types of weddings (and they are happy to accommodate any style or wedding day vision), couples that choose their resorts tend to love the outdoors- particularly the ocean. Since weddings are held near the beach, boats of all shapes and sizes, as well as various types of marine life, are likely to pass by as you say ‘I do’. If you like being out on the water, this is probably your dream location.

Brides tend to fall in love with Painter’s Lodge and April Point not only for their stunning locations, but for their package options that can accommodate many couples’ price points. Travis adds, “We make your special day memorable, easy and affordable. Most of our brides are looking for a destination wedding so their guests can not only celebrate their special day but also enjoy the area and partake in the many activities offered at our resorts.”

OBMG also offers flexibility when it comes to your décor. While the team is happy to help couples who want décor assistance, you’ll also have the freedom to decorate the ceremony and reception areas however you’d like- perfect for couples who have a specific vision for their wedding day.

Artists and Fishermen meet at Painter’s Lodge

Painter’s Lodge

Painter’s Lodge is well known for its involvement in the art community. Each year the resort plays host to painters at Painter’s Lodge, a one of a kind event that celebrates prominent British Columbia artists (we had a chance to attend one year and it was fantastic!). Artists give demonstrations, participate in panel discussions, and create beautiful works all over the property. Signature rooms are dedicated to the artists that have attended the event and are adorned with their artwork.

The Lodge is filled with historical photos of past ‘major catches’ and celebrities who played fisherman for a day, including John Wayne, Glenn Ford and Bob Hope. Guests can spend some time exploring historical images and a variety artwork, displayed throughout the resort.

An island style destination

April Point

Campbell River features its own airport just fifteen minutes away from Painter’s Lodge, and the resort offers a shuttle that will pick you up and drive you right to the front door. For April Point guests, there is free water taxi that leaves from Painter’s Lodge every half hour and takes you right to the resort. At certain times of the year, pods of dolphins and whales will playfully swim along with you and seals will often pop up to say hello. For those who are driving, the Quadra Island ferry leaves every hour on the half hour from Campbell River and arrives just ten minutes away from April Point.

This all in one location offers everything you could possibly need for a wedding weekend away. Travis explains, “Our wedding packagesinclude a romantic scene for your ceremony, a spacious location for your reception, a gourmet catering service for dinner and a DJ. We also offer accommodation for out of town guests and can even help you find a photographer.”

The docks at both April Point and Painters Lodge have ‘resident’ seals who hang out waiting for leftover fish and can often be seen ‘sunning’ themselves as you lunch.  Eagles can also be seen on either side of the water as they swoop down to steal any discarded fish.

These island locations offer several options for brides who would like to make a dramatic entrance. Brides have even flown in to their weddings, landing here to walk down the aisle!  Boating into your ceremony is also an option.

And, in keeping with a one-stop, destination style theme, wedding guests will be able to not only enjoy the celebration, but also take in the local sights and activities. Painter’s Lodge and April Point offer all kinds of activities at their resorts, including fishing charters, wildlife adventure tours and kayaking.

Working with the OBMG team

With over twenty years of experience hosting weddings, the team at OBMG knows what it takes to put on a successful event. Says Travis, “We have an abundance of experience and training. We hire only the best wedding and event coordinators to ensure that your special day goes off without a hitch. Some of our staff have been doing this for over a decade, so you can rest assured that you are in good hands.”

A few of our favourite things…

•    OBMG also owns a beautiful resort in the Bahamas – Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort and Villas. It’s the only Island owned honeymoon resort in this area of the world!
•    The Aveda Concept Spa at April Point is Japanese inspired and very cool! They offer everything from hydrotherapy and body wraps to Caribbean therapy manicures and facials.
•    The grounds at both resorts offer beautiful views of Discovery Passage where you will see a variety of boats and marine life.
•    You can also wander down to the lovely dock areas at both Painter’s Lodge and April Point where fishing tours are frequent!
•    Legends Dining Room and The Tyee Pub at Painter’s Lodge, and the Dining Room at April Point, offer views looking right out over the water and are famous for their cuisine.
•    One of the amazing things that happen at both resorts is the parade of luxury cruise liners that pass by right through the strait several times a week. These cruises appear in the early evening, just as it gets dark, and go on late into the night. The beautifully lit boats are amazing to watch as they silently go by with the stars overhead.
•    The Ring Vancouver Island featured an article in our Fall/Winter 2013 issue about a bride landing in an airplane at April Point on her wedding day!
•    We have numerous stunning photos from our shoot at April Point. The resort opened up for us in the middle of winter, sent staff in to get everything ready and let us shoot for the entire day!
•    Deer and other wildlife often drop by both resorts! Wildlife Adventure Tours leave the resort daily and give you the opportunity to see seals, sea lions, eagles, bears, dolphins and whales.

You’ll have a chance to see where you can get married, the reception location and discuss the various menu options available to you.

Once you’ve chosen your date and signed your contract, your wedding planner will be with you every step of the way.
