Plan Your Fabulous Local Wedding

Kyra and William both have a love for history and anything vintage. When it came to planning their wedding day they knew they wanted to incorporate their love of old things that have a story to tell. With Ivey Spencer Leadership Centre ( as the backdrop, an old gramophone and lots of lace and gold, they were able to bring that feeling to life…

Bride & Groom: Kyra Spencer & William Bent

Wedding Date: August 3, 2018

Ceremony & Reception Location(s): Ivey Spencer Leadership Centre ( “We were looking for somewhere that could host a very small wedding. This can be challenging when you have 14 guests. We also wanted somewhere with a vintage feel and opportunities for photos on location. Kyra’s parents hosted a conference at Ivey Spencer when she was 11 years old and her mom remembered the Willow Room (and the incredible food). We visited, and it was the perfect size and aesthetic. Once we met Caitlin, the on-site coordinator, we knew it was the ideal venue.” – W

Colour Palette: Blue, cream and antique gold

Theme: “Our theme was vintage. We both love history and along with with the venue, and Kyra’s wedding dress, which was made of antique-style lace, it all came together naturally.” – W

Flowers: Springhill Flowers ( “Mary is incredible. I showed her some Pinterest photos, described an English-garden feel and she made it come to life. She incorporated English garden roses, thistle, phlox, white astrantia, nigella, lisianthus, blue scabiosa and lots of greenery.” – K

Décor: “We actually did our own decorations. The Willow Room is stunning to begin with, with a gorgeous fireplace, chandeliers and French doors. We felt there was very little we needed to add. We did incorporate some family heirlooms including a gramophone, cylinders, viewfinder, and telephone.” – K

Fav décor element: “The gramophone. Kyra’s father collected and restored antique radios and record players. She remembers him carefully restoring the horn and preserving the handpainted flowers of the interior.” – W

Invitations/Stationery: Cards & Pockets (

Cake: Sinful Desserts, Burlington ( & Razzle Dazzle Cupcakes ( “We had a cheesecake! When we first started seeing each other, I brought Kyra cheesecake from Burlington for her birthday and it was the best cheesecake we’d ever had. Our brother-in-law kindly drove to Burlington to pick it up. We also had cupcakes for our little guests.” – W

Wedding favours: M&M’s and Pelee Island Wine

Bride’s dress and accessories: The Modern Bride (, accessories: Blair Nadeau Bridal Adornments (, Shoes: Bella Belle Shoes (

Hair & make-up: Nova Vita Hair Studio & Esthetics (

Photographer: Woodgate Photography ( “Erin is so down to earth and personable. She immediately understood our plan for a small and intimate wedding. We were drawn to her night shots, but also her quirky ones (we saw ones which had Pokemon Go incorporated). Upon meeting her, it was clear that she was a good fit for us. She lived in Halifax, like I did, which made for some common ground quickly. She’s also so approachable and laid back, which made William, who is shy, comfortable. We also loved having Clara with us on the wedding day, who was funny, kind, so talented and floofed my dress whenever necessary!” – K

Biggest challenge: “Unless you’re a professional, weddings are something that you don’t plan all that often. Pulling together (and even thinking of) all the little details was difficult. We were grateful to have guidance from Caitlin, the Ivey Spencer wedding coordinator, and the support of family in pulling it all together.” – K

Fav wedding memory: “It sounds cliché, but it’s hard to choose. Whether it was our first look, our first dance, saying I do, the lawn games or the dance, there were so many moments. Ultimately, we loved the quiet moment we had after the ceremony, where it was just the two of us on our own, taking a moment to take the day in together.” – K&W

Advice from one couple to another: “Do your wedding your way. We decided on an intimate wedding with only our family and it was everything we wanted. We got to spend so much quality time with everyone who came which was perfect. If you want to have a big party, do that; if you want to do a destination wedding, do that; if you want to get married at city hall, do that. We do so much for other people and under the pressure of others, but your wedding should be for you and your partner.” – K&W
