With hundreds of prospective photographers in the area, narrowing it down to a handful to talk to one-on-one can be a challenge in itself. Here’s what to ask of your possible photographers before hiring AND what the ideal answers you can expect to receive…
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU CAN’T COMPLETE THE CONTRACT?
IDEAL ANSWER: ‘I have an agreement with several photographers in the area that allows me to get one of them in to replace me in case I can’t be there for you. They shoot similarly to me and will have access to your details well in advance so they know what is occurring and what you are desiring. ’
WHAT IF I CANCEL THE CONTRACT: WHAT HAPPENS? WOULD YOU EVER CANCEL THE CONTRACT? IF SO, WHAT THEN?
IDEAL ANSWER: ‘If you cancel, anything you have paid me up to that point I get to keep. If I can get another wedding into your spot I will return your deposit since I’m not out anything on my end. If I cancel your wedding contract with more than 6 months before your wedding, I will return whatever you have paid me already. If I cancel your contract with less than 6 months to go before the wedding, I will find you an alternative photographer of equal cost and skill and transfer your contract to them with your approval. ’
HAVE YOU SHOT AT MY VENUE (OR VENUES LIKE IT) BEFORE?
IDEAL ANSWER: ‘Yes, all the time’ OR a satisfying response should suggest they at least understand the venues characteristics and have worked in a similar setting.
DO YOU OUTSOURCE YOUR EDITING?
IDEAL ANSWER: ‘We do all our editing in-house in our studio.’ It would help if they further explain how their studio is set up, how they protect your photos during and after editing, and how they ensure your photos won’t get lost before you get them.
HOW WILL YOU SEND ME THE PHOTOS, WHAT ARE THE TECHNICAL SPECS & HOW MANY CAN I EXPECT? There are a few methods photographers are using to delivery photos today: online galleries with download options, USBs, DVD or CDs (yup, those still exist, not that any computers these days come with a drive any more though!) How you get your images is very important if you want to do anything other than post them online.
IDEAL ANSWER: ‘You receive all the photos taken, not just the key moments on a USB in their full resolution (if applicable).
WHAT IS THE MOST TIME I WILL HAVE TO WAIT TO GET MY PHOTOS BACK?
IDEAL ANSWER: ‘Most clients get their photos back within 4-6 weeks [Editor’s note: Many photographers can take 2 to 4 months to return photos]. If there was a lot more photos than expected, or a lot more corrections needed to the photos, add 1 week. ’
COPYRIGHT: DO I HAVE FULL RIGHTS TO MY IMAGES AND WHAT CAN YOU USE MY IMAGES FOR?
IDEAL ANSWER: ‘Yes, you have full images rights without watermarks and we respect any wishes to not use images for our promotions. ’
WHAT AMOUNT DO YOU REQUIRE FOR A DEPOSIT, AND HOW MUCH DO I PAY WHEN I GET MY PHOTOS BACK?
IDEAL ANSWER: ‘We collect a modest deposit as a show of mutual good faith, we collect a portion of the balance before the wedding (presumably to help cover shooting expenses) and we collect a substantial balance on delivery.’
WHERE CAN I READ MORE ABOUT YOUR STUDIO’S REPUTATION WITH WEDDINGS?
IDEAL ANSWER: Here’s a list of online resources where people have reviewed us, as well as a list of local awards we have earned over time. ♥
