On a blistery December morning a group of local wedding vendors gathered at a local coffee shop.

After a few cups of coffee and on the topic of wedding magazine features, it was noted that none of us have ever seen a real outdoor winter editorial or feature in a magazine. So the quest began to bring this into reality, and challenge ourselves to create not one but two winter wonderland themed editorials. One editorial aimed towards a more glamourous winter wonderland theme, while the 2nd would take the approach of a fun, rugged Canadian theme.

Photographing during the winter certainly brings on challenges, and we knew we needed an outdoor location close to an interior spot for prep and warm up. After scouting out a number of locations, we decided to use Darkside Dressage Stables in Puslinch, Ontario. The House gave us the warmth we needed, while the grounds provided a nice variety of locations.

After a few months of planning the day finally arrived, and it was a beautiful day. The sun was out, very little wind, and blue skies. However there where a few limitations and challenges we found with a winter shoot. The snow we received after our scouting trip was around a foot which limited the locations we where able to access. The cold temperatures meant we had to take numerous brakes for the models to warm up. Batteries died easily, and the flowers and Champagne we found out don’t love cold weather. We worked as a team through these challenges, and put together an awesome and fun day of photographing.

The models for the session are real wedding couples, and were selected from a list of people we pooled together. We felt that it was important to give the opportunity of a free photo session to 2 deserving couples who have supported our companies.

A special thank-you to Something Green Bridal in Guelph,ON. They provided beautiful dresses for the day, and it takes a very special bridal shop to provide dresses to be worn in the middle of winter.
