“Classy Canadian Lumberjack” at Concordia Club | Carly & Andrew

Buffalo check plaid, wooden accents and lots of red makes for a very Canadiana feeling wedding day! Carly and Andrew wanted a cozy cottage feeling wedding and they got exactly that with all of their woodsy décor. They were able to elevate into a classy wedding feeling. This is a wedding theme done right!…

Bride & Groom: Carly Gray & Andrew Dair

Wedding Date: September 15, 2018

Ceremony & Reception Locations: Ceremony: Whistle Bear Golf Club (whistlebear.ca) Reception: Concordia Club (concordiaclub.ca) “For the reception, we knew we wanted a venue that could accommodate our guestlist while also staying on-theme for our rustic Canadian style. Concordia Club’s tall, exposed beam ceiling was definitely the main attraction for us. Pair that with the location (close to us, close to our families) and the influence of German heritage seen throughout (German culture is really important to me), and it was an easy decision for us to make this our reception venue.” – C

Colour Palette: Black, red, and buffalo plaid

Theme: “The best way I can summarize our theme is “Classy Canadian Lumberjack.” Think traditional Canadian cottage aesthetic – just more elevated and wedding appropriate. We wanted our wedding to feel cozy – not too stiff, not too proper. We wanted it to have a laid back atmosphere, so we started by bringing more earthy touches indoors. Oak and birch planter centrepieces held our flowers, large cabin-inspired lanterns lit the dance floor in front of our head table. Woodsy décor and buffalo plaid accents peppered throughout the venue helped us achieve that signature Canadian cottage look and feel.” – C&A

Flowers: Special events and flowers (specialeventsandflowers.com). “Red Gerber daisies were our most prominent flower in all of our bouquets and arrangements, but we also had carnations, eucalyptus, and roses to add volume.” – C

Décor: “Special Events and Flowers helped us decorate our venue with string lighting throughout the entire reception space to really make that awesome exposed ceiling pop. They also helped us with a birch archway for both our ceremony and our head table backdrop as well as a birch birdhouse we used as a card box.” – C

Fav wedding décor: “Our Donut wall! One of our favourite desserts is donuts. We knew we wanted them to be a part of the wedding and on display for everyone to enjoy.” – C&A

DIY: “Yes! We were lucky to get some really fantastic decorations second hand and with a little elbow grease, made them our own. Our donut wall and seating chart display were both individual pieces we purchased from past brides. We added a vintage dresser bought separately and fastened it to the donut wall so it could stand unassisted. It was also great to have the extra storage from the drawer! We had help from our families for DIY projects, too. My dad crafted a stand for a wooden door that acted as our seating chart. Buffalo plaid is not usually associated with weddings, so we needed to make our own plaid linens. I bought the fabric and my mom hand-sewed overlay panels for each table. It was definitely thanks to my family’s DIY spirit that my cabin chic décor dreams were fully realized! Also, to really sell the Canadian theme, Concordia Club helped us out with a midnight poutine bar! Delicious and great drunk food.” – C&A

Photographer: Elisha K Photography (elishakphotography.com) “We met Elisha at a Wedding Ring expo! Other than her portfolio, we chose Elisha because of her engaging and infectious personality. My husband and I are always a bit awkward in front of the camera, so we knew we had to work with someone who could make us feel at ease. Other than our photos being absolutely gorgeous, Elisha was able to capture our love for each other in our most authentic light. Our photos are us in every sense and in the most beautiful, real way.” – C&A

Biggest challenge: “Some of our invitations got lost in the mail and up to 2 weeks before the wedding, we were STILL trying to get guests to RSVP! We had two options for RSVPs: online through our website, or a paper RSVP card. A few times, we got RSVP cards back, but with no names included. So we knew that two people were coming to the wedding, but had no idea who they were – it was super frustrating! That was a headache to try and sort out. We ended up having to touch base with guests over the phone or through Facebook/email. I’d recommend keeping your invites simpler with only an online RSVP option. It’s easier to structure RSVPs this way. You can guide your guests through the RSVP process with the right questions.” – C

Fav wedding memory: “Watching all of our loved ones and guests have a killer time and having them with us to celebrate the love we share! We had a long engagement and planned this wedding across 3 years. It was so exciting to see all of our hard work and planning come to life.” – C&A

Advice from one couple to another: “From one planner bride to another, things will go wrong. You can’t plan for everything, but having a day-of coordinator was one of the best decisions we made. From broken lanterns to schedule reminders, having someone at the wedding who could dedicate their time to helping things run more smoothly was a big stress relief for us. We also had an unexpected need for last minute décor removal, and had some supportive guests willing to help us out. Things will come together! Everyone is there for the both of you and will help any way they can! I also recommend trying to go paperless for your RSVPs so you don’t have anonymous guests RSVP’d to your wedding! That, or number each RSVP card so you know which card is associated with which guest.” – C&A
