WAR BRIDES: A British gal and a nice Canadian chap
The full story of the events leading up to the marriage between Mavis and George, as told by war bride herself, Mavis Kenmir.
Tuesday, 20th July, 1943 was the day we met, in a photographer's studio in Newcastle England while waiting for our pictures to be developed. We chatted and exchanged names, and where I lived (Spennymoor, County Durham, 20 miles south of Newcastle). We made a date to meet again (8 pm on Wednesday at Durham Railway Station). I was there, but the Canadian soldier did not arrive. So, "that's the end of that", I thought...

Q. How did your fiance's pending departure affect your wedding plans?
Since Mike was doing pre-deployment training in various cities and countries I planned the wedding entirely on my own. I actually preferred to plan it on my own. We set our wedding date without knowing his departure or training dates, we were very lucky to find out he had a few weeks of vacation before the wedding.

How was it that you came to be engaged? How did the groom propose? How long were you engaged for before you got married?
It was September 21, 2008 when we were playing cards at the kitchen table, and he pulled me into the living room and got down on one knee, told me he loved me then said "will you marry me?". He then told me after that he actually dropped the ring behind me and had to get down on one knee to pick it up. We were engaged from September 21, 2008 to August 8, 2009, so around 11 months.

How was it that you came to be engaged? How did the groom propose? How long were you engaged for before you got married?
In August 2008, Adrian and I decided to take a mini-vacation to visit friends in Thunder Bay, Ontario before going back to school. On our second day there, our friends took us rock climbing at a cliff overlooking a lake. It was a beautiful day and a gorgeous setting and we were all excited for a day of climbing! The men took the equipment and hiked to the top of the cliff to set in our safety lines. As they both rappelled down the cliff, Adrian stopped just short of the ground and called me over. As I approached, he reached in his pocket. I thought he was looking for his camera so I could take pictures. When he pulled his hand out of his pocket, he was holding a ring box and asked me if I would marry him. Of course I said yes! The guy was hanging off a cliff for me! We were engaged for 8 months before the wedding.
