Wedding #4 August 22, 2009: Culture and class

From Portuguese entertainment to fruit shaped ice cream, Brent and Michelle's wedding was an extravagant, fun affair from beginning to end. Tony met Brent at his place of employment and I soon after fell in love with Michelle's cute and bubbly personality – they're both just big teddy bears and so cute together!

The day began at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Mississauga. Brent couldn't stop staring at Michelle as she walked down the aisle after her burgundy clad bridesmaids (though I can't blame him!). There was a bit of rain when we got out of the ceremony but guests still serenaded the newlyweds with bubbles before they hopped in their limo bus and drove off to their photo shoot.

Myself and Tony's co-workers made ourselves comfy at the Courtyard Marriott before heading off to cocktail hour at the Oasis Convention Centre, which translates as receiving line followed by several shots of your choice and lots of yummy Portuguese food (Michelle's nationality).

The Oasis is very dazzling on its own with gold chandeliers, crisp linens and white glove servers. In lieu of favours, Brent and Michelle donated money to several charities – a trend I happen to think is a fabulous idea. Centrepieces were large vases filled with rocks, water a floating candle and a red beta fish.

Throughout dinner (which was a delicious mix of Portuguese and North American), we were entertained with speeches, a couple of Portuguese singers, traditional dancers and even the piano and saxophone talents of Michelle and her father.

The DJ played a mix of music and I even tried my feet at some traditional Portuguese dancing – though, I paled in comparison to the Portuguese guests who actually knew what they were doing. The late-night seafood buffet was adorned by a colourful ice sculpture with the bride and groom's name. Everything was so beautiful and really made the wedding an elegant affair.

The best part – I caught the bouquet! So who knows… perhaps one of the next weddings I get to write about, is my own.
