Owner Lindsay Hinde holds fast to the idea that every bride, no matter what her budget, deserves to have exactly what she wants on her wedding day. Lindsay built her own company, Something Borrowed Wedding & Party Rentals, to serve this belief.
Competitive prices, a dedication to keeping on top of trends, and a friendly and flexible attitude has led brides to call Lindsay a “Godsend.” In its first year of business, Something Borrowed has been a part of twenty-three incredible weddings. And this is only the beginning.......
A second-generation wedding guru
Lindsay started up Something Borrowed after getting married in September, 2010. A new mom with a four-month-old in tow, she had just planned her own wedding and saw first-hand how challenging and time-consuming it is to work with a limited budget. She loved everything about planning a wedding, except for the lofty linen and décor rental prices.
Lindsay had been surrounded by frosting and tulle since she was young; her aunts arranged flowers, decorated venues, and made wedding cakes and wedding dresses. Her mom had worked in the wedding industry and was the go-to florist for the weddings of friends and family. Lindsay had lived in the world of weddings long enough to know that it was the place for her.
So she took her experience and passion and ran with it. She set out on a mission to offer better prices on the services she knew brides wanted. “I loved the industry and had just done a ton of researching for my own wedding,” she says. “And I just kept going with that momentum.”
Something Borrowed, located in St. Thomas, Ontario, became a place where brides could go for a wide range of products and services. It rents out linens and décor, and it also helps brides plan and decorate their whole big day. When brides come in to rent one product, they’ll often end up getting everything they need from Something Borrowed. It’s important to Lindsay that brides aren’t running themselves ragged going to a bunch of different vendors to gather what they need. Something Borrowed is there to do all the heavy lifting. “I try to provide as much as I can for the brides and we are constantly increasing our stock as we grow,” Lindsay says. If a bride wants an item that isn’t already on hand, they just have to ask and Lindsay will try to get it.
Lindsay has helped brides on shoestring budgets, and brides that are less concerned with costs and are more focused on seeing their ideas come to life. She has worked with couples that know exactly what they want, as well as couples that hand over the reigns and give Lindsay creative control. Lindsay says she enjoys it all. “I’m absolutely loving it!”
On budget
When bride-to-be Amanda Small started looking for her wedding rentals, she couldn’t believe how great Something Borrowed’s prices were. “I looked at ALL the rental companies in my area that I could find, and Lindsay's prices beat everyone else’s hands down! Besides the fact that she is local, she is also extremely nice, and goes out of her way to make you happy. She gave us great deals on everything we have purchased and rented.”
For a wedding with 150 people the Something Borrowed bride spends around $1550 on average for a decorating package that includes 150 chair covers, 150 sashes,18 floor-length linens, 18 centrepieces, head table decor, and a backdrop.
“We work very hard to accommodate every bride, on every budget,” Lindsay says. “Our prices are very competitive and we strive to purchase high quality products.”
On trend
Beyond great prices, and helping frantic brides to cross “find something borrowed!” off their to-do lists, this is a company that aims to provide clients with lots of options, including the hottest trends and the newest designs. “I am constantly doing research, gathering tips and tricks from all of my suppliers, and taking courses to improve my skills,” Lindsay admits. Lindsay even studied floral arranging at Fanshawe College to ramp up her how-to knowledge.
Amanda describes Something Borrowed’s style as “with the times.” She says, “Lindsay was very helpful throughout all of our planning. She offered her insight and views on what was in, and what was not.” For her upcoming June wedding, Amanda wanted to be able to save her flowers as a keepsake, and knew that real flowers weren’t for her. Lindsay introduced her to Real Touch flowers, silk flowers that feel just like the real thing and can be easily be preserved. The perfect solution.
Lindsay says she tries to stay local as much as she can when looking for items, but that she is also willing to travel; whatever it takes to pursue the best of the best.
Friendly and flexible
Amanda loved working with Lindsay. “She was a Godsend for us,” Amanda says. “We are so, so thankful that we found her. She is very professional, kind, and goes out of her way to make sure you are happy!” Amanda tells us that Lindsay was quick to provide her with contacts of other trusted vendors, including DJs and photographers.
“I'm very easy going and try to help out brides in all aspects of their wedding,” Lindsay explains. “Going through the process myself not that long ago, I know it can get very frustrating trying to source out different vendors. So I try and provide brides with contacts that I personally used for my wedding or have worked with.”
Something Borrowed is equipped for any type of wedding you’re after, be it a traditional, simple, or glamorous celebrity-style affair. Lindsay takes her cue from the bride’s personal style. “I am very flexible and try to base the décor on the personalities of the brides. I give suggestions but ultimately follow their vision, whatever that may be.”
Lindsay tries to stray from impersonal packages. “I find that everyone wants something different and what works for one bride doesn’t work for another. So I choose to work one-on-one with the bride and figure out what they need and want and try, and then I customize a package deal just for them.”
From start to finish
Something Borrowed is there to guide couples through every step of the process, and are completely open about what they can expect along the way.
It all begins in the showroom. Couples meet Lindsay there to sit and review all the details of their wedding, including the date, location, themes, colour scheme, and what they are looking for from Something Borrowed. Lindsay provides a quote, which includes all the items and services they already know they’ll need.
Once a couple decides to book, Lindsay will visit the venue to take measurements if necessary. She can also meet there with the couple to ensure everyone is on the same page. Then about two to three weeks before the wedding, Lindsay will email the couple with a copy of their invoice so they can confirm their numbers and review the balance owing for their order.
One week prior to their wedding Lindsay will go over any questions or concerns that the couple may have. Next, Something Borrowed gets to work on decorating the venue the day before or morning of, whichever is most convenient for the venue and the couple’s schedule.
Finally, it’s time for the ‘I do’s! Something Borrowed can do the takedown, so the bride and groom can focus on having fun! When it’s all over and the confetti has been swept away, Lindsay will check the returns and will keep the couple in the loop about any problems with returns or damages. Ta da! A no-fuss success.
