Setting their own definition of what a good wedding planner should be, Pure Potential has sights set on dream weddings
Reviewing Christine Martin, Owner, Pure Potential Weddings
Review is written by Staff @ The Ring and is based on • Interviews with this vendor • Interviews with past brides • Our experiences
Christine Martin has her own ideas of what a good wedding planner should be; a sounding board for ideas, an empathetic ear for stress and venting, a communicator, an advocate for the bride and groom, a detail lover, a logistics coordinator... And a life saver if things don't go according to plan.
With four years of planning experience, Christine is the coordinator within her event planning company, Pure Potential Weddings. From full coordination to simply helping out with the finishing touches and even traveling to help coordinate your destination wedding, Pure Potential has something for every bride’s needs – or at least the potential for Christine to customize a package. The experts at Pure Potential are constantly expanding on their knowledge of the wedding industry so they can make sure that no two weddings are the same. In fact, Christine has worked with Rebel Creek Golf Club, The Event Firm and the Elm Hurst Inn, in addition to planning stage shows and destination weddings. That's why it only made sense for our staff to sit down with Christine and find out more about what Pure Potential has to offer brides in The Ring - brides who Christine says she treats more like friends than clients so they know they can trust her to make their wedding dreams come true. Here's what we found...
Christine knows that brides can get overwhelmed with the hundreds of wedding details out there. The good news is that she loves to do the things brides see as particularly stressful – organizing, planning, creating and then executing. In fact, Christine's own wedding took place in Ottawa, an event that she planned while spending time in Africa and British Columbia.
Even with her strong passion for and knowledge of weddings, that doesn’t stop Christine from continually growing and educating herself. Christine says that Pure Potential has a library of books to read and a list of vendors they work with who they are always learning from. In fact, last summer, Christine worked many weddings with The Event Firm (another favourite in The Ring) and says she gained a greater knowledge of the décor industry through this experience.
Christine is an expert in her own right and offered up her advice on budget tips in Issue 4 of The Ring's Bridal News Magazine. Pure Potential is also currently helping The Ring plan and coordinate The Kitchener Brides' Ball this year, which is set to take place on Friday, June 19.
In a recent interview, Christine told The Ring that she couldn’t pinpoint just one great achievement from their past year of planning weddings, "I feel that every wedding for us is a great achievement. After so many months of planning a wedding, to finally see it all come together and to know that you helped someone’s day be that much more special... that's a huge achievement and brings much satisfaction."
Christine says that all wedding decisions are the bride and groom's to make. She considers herself a facilitator in the decision making process - making sure you know all your options before making the best possible and informed decisions. Validating the name of her company, Christine believes there is pure potential in any wedding idea or dream. "Give me your wedding dream and I'll find a way to help you make it happen!" She says that couples should think of her as their assistant. "I'm helping you to plan your day, not planning it for you."
Paul and Angela Massey had Christine help them with partial wedding planning for their August 2008 wedding. Angela says that having Christine finalize details "made the process easier, less work for me, and more fun." She added, "I didn't have to worry about the nitty-gritty things, the last minute things, and the day-of set-up. I had Christine to do all of that for me and was able to enjoy myself instead."
"We are so grateful that Christine was there on that day to look after any little wrinkles that arose," say Mike Crosby and his wife Alysia, who used Pure Potential for partial planning for their August 2008 wedding. They added that thanks to Christine they could just relax and soak up every minute of their celebration.
Bride and groom, Christina and Daniel, were married August 26, 2006, with Pure Potential to help them with their planning. Christina and Daniel told staff at The Ring that hiring Christine gave them the peace of mind to enjoy the most important aspect of any wedding, which was each other. Christina told us, "Christine is a very organized and systematic person without coming across as 'tunnel-visioned' or 'cold'... She has the ability to see what needs to be done, to take charge, and to make it happen just the way I had envisioned it..."
Christine is outgoing and friendly. It would be easy to pass several hours talking about weddings with her, while soaking in some of her energy and enthusiasm for the job she loves. Christine believes that her personality is going to make the difference, setting her apart from other planners, because personality is so important in a wedding planner. "I want the bride and groom to be comfortable working with me and having me at their side. They should be able to trust me and enjoy planning their wedding with me. Your wedding coordinator shouldn't be another source of stress... And the wedding planner should become one of your closest friends..."
It was Christine’s enthusiastic personality that Charles & Tracy Gieringer say won their business with Pure Potential for fully planning their September 2008 wedding. "Christine was the one who seemed genuinely excited for us, and excited to have the opportunity to work with us... It seems that this is not a 'job' for Christine, but rather something that she loves to be involved with."
Another important focus for Pure Potential is trying to help each bride discover what is unique about her wedding and making sure that no two weddings are alike. "We are all about customizing to each client," say Christine. "We pride ourselves in having something for every bride. If you are looking for something we don't have... let us know."
Christine considers herself to be very hands-on, helping with décor, flowers, and even doing make-up when the moment calls for it. "I like to think of your wedding as a really big production," she says, telling us that she plays as many parts in that production as she can - if it will make it easier on the bride and groom. "It's your show. You're the star. It's all about you."
Charles and Tracy said that it was nice to be able to relax and enjoy their wedding day, knowing that Christine was there to handle any details that may have come up. "Christine provided the focus we needed to plan a day that was everything that we wanted."
Kate hired Pure Potential for her October 20, 2007 wedding day and told staff at The Ring that she got everything she wanted and more. "I always heard from brides to not be upset when things don't go as planned on your wedding day so just let things roll off your back. Aside from being sick (which Christine tried to help me with but couldn't) there was not a single hair out of place. Everything was handled from the moment I got ready to the moment I went home a married woman. Christine made sure I wasn't bothered with any details... If things didn't go as planned, I didn't know about them. And that is a true blessing... It was great to have that true feeling of being the bride, the centre of attention and having someone make you feel that incredible."
Carrying her own comprehensive bridal emergency kit, which is really rather like a suitcase, Christine approaches events with an anything-can-happen-and-she's-ready-for-it mentality. "I carry everything from tape to tampons," she laughs, adding that she has used her emergency kit at every event she has planned.
Local bride, Christina said Pure Potential was always making sure she, as a bride, felt calm and was listened to throughout the process. "Christine was very outgoing, helpful and concerned about meeting my needs," she told The Ring.
That said, she also makes it common practice to get to know the bridal party, family and close friends. Christine says this is important so that everyone closest to the bride and groom feel comfortable trusting in her and asking her any questions they might have. "Clients should not have their families and friends running around on their wedding day, working on the details of the event. That's why a wedding planner is so valuable. Friends and family should be able to enjoy the wedding without working at it." For any of the usual responsibilities that are delegated to the family and bridal party (such as carrying the ring at the ceremony), Christine provides a list to everyone at the rehearsal. This keeps everyone on track and ready for the big day.
Even the wedding budget has potential. "To get started, all you need to know for sure is what your budget is... What you have to spend, what your parents are contributing, if anything..." And if you don't know that yet, Christine is more than happy to help you create your budget. She says many couples don't know where to start. "That's part of my job and I'm happy to help!" Christine has worked with budgets ranging from $8,000 to $55,000 (and more!) in the past, but she's happy to help anyone with any budget - be it less than $8,000 or more than $55,000. "We love all of our clients and recognize that every bride is unique in her own way," says Christine.
For Christine, it's about the experience of helping a couple create this dream wedding day and not just about the dollar figure on their budget spreadsheet. She helps the bride and groom allocate their funds to the things that matter most to them. "What's most important to you? If it's photography, then invest your money in that area and less in other areas."
"We found Pure Potential Weddings' prices to be extremely reasonable," say Alysia and Mike. They add that Christine also helped with their budget planning, "Christine was very honest about where we might be able to save money and where we might want to splurge," which they say they really appreciated. "We agree that we got excellent value from Pure Potential Weddings."
"We appreciated that Christine offered everything from hourly consultations, day of co-ordination, to full service planning," say Charles and Tracy. "Basically we could choose the level of service we wanted." They add that Christine had great contacts for photographers, flowers, an officiant and more and definitely made the planning so much easier for them.
Complete Peace of Mind: The couples who choose Christine's full wedding coordination package are looking for help with just about every aspect of their wedding. "I help with everything from the venue and DJ to the flowers..." It also includes a free consultation and Thirty Day Countdown (detailed below).
A La Carte: Christine says that this partial wedding coordination package is her most popular service because "it gives the couple exactly what they need. It isn't full coordination, but it's definitely more than day-of, which many couples find very appealing." It's great for the bride and groom who have planned aspects or parts of their wedding but still need help with various details, such as the menu or photographer. "I can be hired at any time during the wedding planning." Kate hired Christine just after she had booked all her 'big ticket items' such as the DJ, church, reception venue and photographer "What was great is that I didn't have to pay for the whole thing when I had already done that part myself. I could have Christine for what I needed, not the other way around. There was flexibility... Christine helped with everything. She came to meetings with my DJ, decorator, reception hall... She was there for the rehearsal, the wedding and reception. She decorated the church for me, and helped out in all areas. The biggest help was having someone who totally understood our vision and had no agenda of her own and helped make that come true."
Thirty Day Countdown: "I begin meeting with the couple three to four weeks prior to the wedding. We go over all the details in place and of course, those left unattended. I create a wedding day timeline, contact all of the couple's vendors to review details, I help run the rehearsal for them, pick up any rentals and then on the wedding day, I am wherever the bride and groom need me to be!" Christine also has Afzia, her certified wedding planner assistant, for the day of the wedding. "The bride and groom are essentially getting two certified planners for the price of one when they choose Pure Potential Weddings." She has been known to step in as late as two days before the wedding, a job that is instantly rewarding and equally challenging.
The Finishing Touches: This new package at Pure Potential is for day-of coordination of your wedding for the bride who needs help managing the wedding day. Whether that means making sure the schedule flows smoothly or taking care of any issues with vendors - whatever it is, Christine or Afzia will handle it so you can just enjoy the day.
The Traveling Bride: Also known as the destination package, this is for clients who want to take their wedding outside of the K-W region. As Christine points out, "There is a lot to know when you are planning a wedding from a distance to arrive to a place you've maybe never seen." That is where Christine can help - with all of the details and the peace of mind.
Pearls of Wisdom: These wedding consultations are for the bride and groom who would really like to plan their own wedding but need a little help or a few ideas. "They let me know at booking time what they are looking for from me during their consultation, then I gather all the information and present it to them during the consultation." Pearls of Wisdom are a two hour minimum and often considered priceless in value.
From there, it's about figuring out what needs to be done to make your wedding dream come true. Creating a breakdown of responsibilities and a schedule puts the bride, groom and wedding planner on the same page, and everyone will know what to expect of each other.
After that, planning your wedding with Christine can be a lot of fun; wedding shopping, incorporating creative and personalized elements, and of course, getting everything done (on time!) without breaking a sweat.
Christina admitted that one of the things she liked best about Pure Potential was that they offered a variety of wedding planning options for every bride with every budget "... I didn't need a full wedding coordinator; I only needed someone for the day of [the wedding] and that is exactly what Christine was able to provide."
The fee for Complete Peace of Mind is based on 10% of the wedding budget or a minimum of $1800. A La Carte coordination is a $1500 flat fee. These fees are paid in monthly installments towards the balance which is due two weeks prior to your wedding date. As with other packages, a $200 initial payment holds your date. The Thirty Day Countdown at Pure Potential is an $800 flat fee and The Finishing Touches costs $550. The cost for The Traveling Bride is determined after an initial consultation with Christine and the quote she gives you will include travel costs as well. Pearls of Wisdom consultations with Christine cost $150 for the first two hours and $50 per hour after that with a minimum of two hours required, payable as you go along.
Christine knows that the wedding budget is one of the most important elements of any wedding day so she works with couples to design a payment plan that works best for them. "I definitely think Pure Potential was worth the amount I paid," says Angela, especially considering the amount of things that Christine took care of so Angela didn’t have to. She even helped find vendors and products that would work within Angela and Paul’s budget.
Pure Potential recommends booking as soon as possible to ensure availability. Christine believes that nearly anything can be done within any time frame as long as the bride and the venue are flexible, so short notice requests are welcomed.

Personally speaking...
For the past four years, Christine Martin has been planning couples' weddings - the last two years of which have been through her own company, Pure Potential Weddings. This WPIC certified event coordinator admits that her day-to-day job is one she's been dreaming of since she was a little girl, and is now one she's turned into a career. "I love figuring out every little (and big) detail that needs to be done, mapping out a strategy, and then making sure everything is completed to perfection."Christine knows that brides can get overwhelmed with the hundreds of wedding details out there. The good news is that she loves to do the things brides see as particularly stressful – organizing, planning, creating and then executing. Growing in the wedding biz...
In 2009, Pure Potential was very successful and in order to keep up with the amount of clients they had, they added a new Associate Planner, Afzia Shareef who specializes in day-of coordination. Christine assured us that clients will still work with her (the Principal Planner) to plan their weddings; but for multiple weddings on the same day, Afzia will take care of those, which Christine says clients are always made aware of upon booking.
The definition of a wedding planner
According to Christine and Pure Potential, a successful wedding planner takes on many roles: a sounding board for ideas, an empathetic ear for venting, a communicator, an advocate for the bride and groom, a detail lover, a logistics coordinator... And a life saver when it comes to saving the bride and groom the stresses of planning a wedding.Christine says that all wedding decisions are the bride and groom's to make. She considers herself a facilitator in the decision making process - making sure you know all your options before making the best possible and informed decisions. What a bride loves
Christine considers herself assigned to the bride and groom and their wedding dreams, but she doesn't limit herself to helping only them. "I've sewn on buttons for guests, given out headache medications and answered guest questions about meals and timing... Whatever comes up, whatever I can do to make the day smooth and enjoyable for everyone, that's what I do."Charles and Tracy said that it was nice to be able to relax and enjoy their wedding day, knowing that Christine was there to handle any details that may have come up. Focusing on theme & budget potential
For Pure Potential, particularly when it comes to full planning packages, everything is centered around a theme or a 'look' that is unique to the bride and groom. "It's about bringing in creativity and uniqueness to your own wedding, staying true to the beliefs and traditions that are important to you, and creating new traditions where it will mean the most."Even the wedding budget has potential. "To get started, all you need to know for sure is what your budget is... What you have to spend, what your parents are contributing, if anything..." And if you don't know that yet, Christine is more than happy to help you create your budget. She says many couples don't know where to start. "That's part of my job and I'm happy to help!" Christine offers five packages in addition to consulting sessions. All of her services are specifically designed around what she knows couples are looking for. While each package is customizable for every bride who visits Pure Potential, they offer package guidelines to get your started with the basics. In 2008 they even added some new packages just so they can suit every brides needs even better."We appreciated that Christine offered everything from hourly consultations, day of co-ordination, to full service planning," say Charles and Tracy.
