Review is written by Staff @ The Ring and is based on • Interviews with this vendor • Interviews with past brides
From providing music as you walk down the aisle, to serenading guests at dinner, and playing the perfect song for that perfect first dance, a DJ plays a huge part in the wedding day. So when it came time to interview Jasmyn Lancinger, owner and disc jockey at Kitchener-based Olympic Sound, it was easy to see why brides were raving over her and the team of DJs she works with at Olympic Sound. Jasmyn is a professional disc jockey, a mom of three and a self-proclaimed organizational-freak (a trait that any bride will respect when it comes to planning!). Jasmyn not only acknowledges the importance of the role your DJ plays on the wedding day, but she says Olympic Sound DJs know how to direct a great stag & doe too. They're never afraid to dig in and help if you ask them to. So, armed with a great personality, hands-on experience, and high tech equipment, Jasmyn and the team at Olympic Sound are certainly some of our brides' new favourite DJs to check out in The Ring. Let us explain...
From the beginning...
In college, Jasmyn helped out a neighbour and did some part-time DJ work for about two years. In 2002 she started Olympic Sound after coming to the realization that the customer deserves "both personality and service". But her love of entertaining started much earlier; as a child, Jasmyn had a passion for music, dance and drama, all based around a guiding principle: 'Pride in Performance', a motto that she continues to live by.
Jasmyn’s love of entertaining, combined with her ambitious personality, ensures that your event is made memorable. She notes that she "enjoys every minute of every day of my 'job'." She especially enjoys the variety in the events, venues and the people. It’s just herself and her music, which she "blends and moulds to suit the event."
This passion has paid off: in 2009, Olympic Sound was awarded the 2009 Reader's Choice Top DJ Service Diamond Award. They also won the 2010 Kitchener Record Reader's Select Gold Award for Best DJ Service!
Dayna Renaud says that when she met with Jasmyn to discuss being the DJ at her March 2010 wedding, she immediately knew that Jasmyn wanted her party to be everything she and her husband dreamed of. "She was so easy to talk to and had great ideas and organization right from our first email," Dayna tells us. She adds that Jasmyn's style was "trendy, hip, organized, accountable, and appropriate to the guests and atmosphere of the wedding."
The team behind the scenes
Since Olympic Sound has continually gotten busier over the past couple of years, Jasmyn has added several new members to the Olympic Sound team (including her sister Lauren). Jasmyn told us that her team of DJs are just as skilled as she is and have become a big part of the business, working events almost every weekend. "They are all very helpful and friendly and have a great ear for music and reading the crowd... they also maintain a high level of professionalism."
It's the entire team's motivation and ambition for what they do that truly proves the company’s tagline: "Professional DJ's with Personality". When you book with Olympic Sound you know you're getting a DJ who is, "Fun, hip and trendy, but also classy, professional and confident."
While Olympic Sound’s main focus is weddings, Jasmyn and the rest of the team at Olympic Sound also offer DJ services for the community at corporate events and functions, Christmas parties, fundraisers and charity events for some notable clients such as Manulife Financial and Wilfrid Laurier University, among others. They even do school dances for grades ranging from kindergarten to university because they, "love the young crowd and the energy they bring to the dance floor." Whatever the event may be, you can be assured that the Olympic Sound DJs will enjoy it thoroughly, "We love being able to participate and make a contribution to the events that are so important and personal to clients and friends."
They also told us that they run a dance-a-thon fundraising service for local schools. "We are very excited about this service because it helps the school raise funds while encouraging kids to be healthy and active while having a ton of fun."
Plus, Olympic Sound DJs often volunteer for numerous youth groups and annually takes part in the local Spring Sprint for the Brain Tumour Foundation by donating a sound system for music and a PA system for speeches and announcements. They do the same thing for the RE/MAX fundraising for breast cancer campaign and auction and the Rotary Club of Kitchener-Waterloo.
Weddings with Olympic Sound...
No need to worry about inadequate sound or the wrong music being played; Olympic Sound boasts of playing a "blend of continuous music by your favourite artists on our professional and reliable sound system." Jasmyn adds that Olympic Sound has a music library that spans generations and various styles to please all guests. Many DJs run their music from a computer, but Olympic Sound prefers the 'old school way' of running off of CDs and mixers.
There is never a dull moment at a wedding with someone from Olympic Sound as the DJ, and Miranda Bilotta, who had Olympic Sound provide the music for her January 2010 wedding ceremony, dinner and dance, could not agree more. "Jasmyn really made the day come together and was very organized," says Miranda. "She played exactly what we wanted and came up with suggestions to make each part of the day flow perfectly." Miranda describes Jasmyn as "professional, yet really fun and outgoing. Olympic Sound has a great variety of music that would suit every style you could imagine, and they really know how to keep a crowd going."
The team at Olympic Sound are very accessible for contact, and will promptly returns messages, which is important in the wedding industry. How interactive they are at your wedding is up to the bride and groom – they can make their presence known, or be virtually invisible. Throughout the whole planning process, Miranda says that Jasmyn was extremely professional and organized. "She made us feel really comfortable, like hanging out with a friend who happens to 'know her stuff' about music and the whole wedding industry. She is really outgoing and fun... She was available up until the day of the wedding through phone and email... And met with us to make sure she had everything just right for the big day."
Cool Extras: The Mini-Studio Photobooth
Our absolute favourite new option at Olympic Sound is the Mini-Studio Photobooth. The difference with this photobooth is that it is run by a real photographer. The team at Olympic Sound explains, "There are no foot pedals, no timers — just a fun, friendly photographer to interact with your guests and snap the shutter at just the right moment to capture the crazy. It’s like stepping into your own studio — anything goes, and anything can happen."
The Mini-Studio Photobooth uses real studio lighting and professional DSLR cameras, making it an ideal keepsake option for albums, enlargements, posters, and of course: Facebook. We LOVE this idea!
Walking you through it...
When you book Olympic Sound for your event, a $200 deposit, payable by cheque, cash or email money transfer is required in order to hold the date. Since Olympic Sound continues to grow and become more popular in the local community, they recommend that you call early – as soon as you know your wedding date. While they will accommodate last minute bookings if someone is available, the year ahead is already booking fast and they hate to turn brides away.
Miranda was looking for a fun and outgoing DJ who wasn't 'cheesy' and who would fit in with her whole wedding atmosphere. After the first meeting, she says it was clear that Olympic Sound would be the perfect choice. "Jasmyn wasn't overpowering, trying to tell us what we wanted. She really took the time to listen and offer suggestions to ensure our day was exactly what we wanted," says Miranda.
Three months prior to the date, Jasmyn will email you a consult workbook consisting of all the 'Need to Know' information like 'no-play' songs, 'must-play' songs, an agenda, and more. Dayna loved that Olympic Sound let her do anything, from choosing each and every song if she wanted to have guests fill out requests, or have Olympic Sound take complete control and do it all. "We decided on a little of each and had our favourites with Jasmyn's creativity and ability to 'feel' the crowd and get them moving, while also allowing for on the spot requests that night."
About two to four weeks prior to the wedding, Jasmyn meets with the couple, or talks with them over email and the phone to go over the workbook. This allows her to get to know the couple and their expectations of their DJ, and find any music that Olympic Sound may not have on file. Jasmyn is always in touch with the couples and makes sure that they are excited and happy with Olympic Sound and the upcoming wedding day. Eric and Sarah had Olympic Sound DJ at their wedding reception and say that they were very friendly throughout the whole process. "They provided us with a questionnaire prior to the event and left no stone unturned. There were no surprises. We had a long list of song requests and gave them to them prior to the event and they were able to honour our requests."
Even after the job is done, the Olympic Sound DJs wants to make sure their couples were completely satisfied, that the music was good, the volume and quantity of songs was adequate, and that they pleased everyone; young, old, and especially the bride and groom – whom they love to hear feedback from.
Stag & does with an Olympic touch
Olympic Sound also offers DJ services for stag & does at a discounted price, and much like the wedding, their involvement can be minute or monumental depending on what the couple wants. They take requests, and can host interactive games such as crown and anchor and the toonie toss, while keeping in mind the goal to have fun and raise money. Jasmyn says she loves to create a fun party so that the guests will stay and the bride and groom will turn a profit. She also likes to get to know the crowd, and loves seeing them again at the wedding.
Pricing it out
Pricing to have Olympic Sound put the soundtrack to your wedding starts at $595. The average Olympic Sound bride spends $895, which would include music for cocktails, dinner, and the dance. Olympic Sound is flexible with their packages and timeframes so work out any details or specific requests with them.
"Jasmyn was well worth the price," Miranda tells us. "We found her prices very reasonable." She adds that she would absolutely recommend Olympic Sound to other couples looking for a DJ. "You want to make sure you go with someone you can trust. Jasmyn has excellent reviews, brides love her, she is organized and professional, but is super fun and can really get the party started. She is well worth the price and you will be happy you chose her... we certainly are!"
