Reviewing Jan Dickinson, Heritage London Foundation Estate Manager for Grosvenor Lodge & Elsie Perrin Williams Estate
Review is written by Staff @ The Ring and is based on • Interviews with this vendor
Grosvenor Lodge has been a long-time favourite wedding location for staff at The Ring. It can be the perfect venue for any classic or informal and intimate wedding.
The 150 year old mansion has a long list of wedding day features such as a winding staircase, stained glass windows and a kitchen garden. It also has the reputation and service expected from a Heritage London property. Having hosted countless weddings and even a yearly spring bridal show, there's a lot for us to tell you about Grosvenor Lodge. Let us explain...
For the true romantic
After you pull into the drive and past the stone entranceway that marks its address, you can see that Grosvenor Lodge has all the things that any bride could appreciate on their wedding day. The mansion was built for Anne Peters by her husband Samuel Peters in 1853. You can see the special care Samuel took in the monograms he designed into the mansion's stained glass windows - starting with those around the old oak doors, featuring a Victorian Love Knot with Anne and Samuel's initials intertwined. The Peters were one of London's pioneer families and the home remained in their family for three generations before it was given to Heritage London Foundation.
Grosvenor Lodge is a English Tudor estate boasting of gothic-style features such as steeped gables and massive chimneys. A covered verandah wraps around much of the Lodge, and draws you inside where you'll see wide plank pine floors throughout, large original fireplaces, detailed plaster work, and of course the winding staircase so often used by the bride as she enters her wedding ceremony.
Grosvenor Lodge is also home to a small summer house and a gazebo (called a 'kissing gate' by the Lodge), which are both great for photos and small outdoor ceremonies. The kitchen gardens and front lawns are popular as informal photo-taking spots.
Personally speaking
In addition to its historical classification, Grosvenor Lodge is maintained by Heritage London Foundation, its weddings and events generating the revenue that keeps the Lodge running and looking like it did in 1853. This means that the people who work here love the building as much as you do, and they'll take care to make sure it looks fantastic for your wedding day.
Weddings at Grosvenor are planned with staff that know the premises by heart. The Event Coordinators and their staff are at the Lodge on a daily basis, often designing their time around helping London brides plan dream weddings.
Jan has over 14 years experience at Grosvenor Lodge, and her staff doesn't fall very far behind. Jan's dedicated staff also work with brides at the lodge, and many have a minimum of two years' experience with wedding days here. With minimal advertising and plenty of word-of-mouth referrals, Jan and her team have seen weddings of all styles - including traditional and upscale garden weddings, second weddings, and alternative weddings, just to name a few.
Weddings at Grosvenor Lodge
A Grosvenor wedding day may be indoors or out and it may include just one portion of your wedding day or the entire series of events - ceremony, photos, reception and dance.
When you rent Grosvenor Lodge for your wedding day, you are renting the entire Victorian house and the surrounding grounds for the span of sixteen hours, from 9 am to 1 am.
For brides who book their 2009 wedding, a separate room will be available for her and her bridesmaids to use when getting ready, bustling the gown or adjusting hair and make-up.
In the past, Jan and her staff have worked with a variety of wedding budgets - from $500 to $800. Because of its low rental fee, Grosvenor Lodge provides you with the flexibility to plan a wedding as unique as you are.
Grosvenor ceremonies
Outdoor wedding ceremonies at Grosvenor Lodge entail a ceremony set against gardens of English lavender, an on-site gazebo, white wood chairs and trees that surround the clearing.
Indoor ceremonies are usually held in the Drake Room. Guests arrive in the main foyer, turn to their right, and are seated facing the front of the space where large bay windows look out onto the property's greenery and flowers. A fireplace is located in each room and add an extra touch of class & history. High ceilings and dark wood accents all over the house can augment any romantic wedding theme.
Grosvenor receptions
The main floor encompasses two rooms (the Drake Room and Genet Hodder Room), a winding staircase (which you can see right as you enter the building) and the grand foyer/front hall. Stained glass accents are seen throughout, many of which contain the monogram of the first story of love and family to take place here.
Your décor choices are entirely up to you. Adding personal touches by hiring a decorator or putting photographs on the tables, piano or mantles, is more than welcomed. Indoor receptions either happen in one of the larger rooms or on the entire main floor. Sunday garden party-style weddings with cocktail-style or small round tables are charming when set up on the verandah. These weddings have elegance, an atmosphere of family and friendship, as well as outdoor elements that include protection from potential rain.
