360 Photography brings talent, experience & artistic, magazine-friendly photography to GTA weddings

When we met Paul Cheney and Jennifer Kelly of 360 Photography, we knew we had to feature and review this company. Their fashion style magazine-friendly approach to shooting immediately landed one of their high end Toronto weddings in The Wedding Ring Magazine (Spring/Summer 2011 issue). Since then, we’ve interviewed their brides, interviewed Paul and Jennifer (Paul’s dry sarcasm had us laughing throughout most of it) and set out to narrow down the reasons we believe brides choose 360 Photography. With incredible images and a unique husband-wife team approach to Toronto and worldwide weddings, here’s what we found…

Starting out young

Paul Cheney has been interested in photography for as long as he can remember. And he started young. “I photographed my first wedding at 15.” Paul says its second nature to him. He thinks outside the box, he’s comfortable directing people without being too obtrusive, and he knows how to capture moments without ruining them in the process.

Paul created 360 Photography ten years ago (after shooting for fifteen years under his own name) and has photographed close 1000 weddings to date. Now with partner and wife, Jenn Kelly, (who originally met Paul as his competitor at a wedding show and who has shot about 400 weddings herself!) they are a photographic team focused on delivering what brides and grooms want.

Paul has been involved in every aspect of photography and the industry. Having graduated from Sheridan College after studying implied photography, he went on to study colour science and digital imaging at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He has photographed famous faces such as Bill Clinton and Detroit Red Wing players (though Paul admits he knows nothing about hockey!).

Reasons to love 360 Photography

With a cross between photojournalism and fashion style shooting, Paul and Jennifer have shot wedding locally and in other countries, covering a vast array of locations and cultures. Paul says that 360 Photography offers creativity, experience, and technical expertise - without getting lost in it. And part of what staff at The Ring believes sets 360 apart in their industry is their ability to do all of this with focus, talent, and a nice dose of humour (we found ourselves laughing at most of Paul’s dry sarcasm and funny comments throughout our interview).

Natasha Sawh, who married in August 2009, loved the mixture of shots. “Their photography was a great combination of candid shots and posed ones… They capture the day both in terms of moments, but also in beautiful shots of the venue, the dress, the flowers etc. Jenn also managed to get a photograph of almost every single person who attended our wedding – some 140 people!”

Cynthia Davis, married in May 2009, agrees. “They are really good at getting both the beautiful portrait shots using the setting to the best advantage and yet capturing those candids that are so important.”

Honesty is the best policy

When choosing a photographer it is important to see examples of their work and for them to tell honestly what you can and can’t expect from them. Let’s face it; it is unlikely that photographers can hang out of a crane to get the perfect aerial shot, although you may love the idea.

Cynthia loved Paul’s honesty on their first meeting. “He brought with him some sample books, described his style, but then asked us questions about what we expected. He was upfront in confirming what he could provide and what he couldn’t promise… it was very comforting to have someone be really frank and honest about what we would be getting.”

Letting artistic results speak for themselves

Ryan Bloxsidge, married in August 2010, told The Ring why he was impressed with 360. “The reason you hire Paul is for his creative eye. He’s an artist that manipulates photography as his medium.”

The proof is in the photograph itself. Cynthia said that she wouldn’t say a word while recommending 360. “I wouldn’t have to say anything. One look at our wedding albums and they’ll hire 360!”

The couple featured in the Spring/Summer 2011 issue of The Wedding Ring Magazine, Jordana and David, say they loved the details in their images. “He has an unbelievable eye for small details and often sees things that other photographers don’t. What sets him apart is his ability to capture that one picture that completely sums up the entire day. There is always one that takes your breath away and with Paul you’re guaranteed to get it.”

Because Jordana and David don’t normally like having their photos taken, Jordana was surprised how many photos she could show off. “I hate the way I look in pictures and Dave hates having his picture taken, so the fact that we ended up with so many shots we were proud to show our family and friends really speaks of the talent that Paul and Jenn bring to the table.”

Putting their hearts into your wedding

Your wedding pictures stay with you forever; they are your lasting memory of your big day so you want someone who shares the excitement and emotion with you. Paul told The Ring how they put themselves into every job. “Jenn and I go well above and beyond what is expected of us, we pour our heart and soul into what we do, we do everything we can to offer our customers the service they expect.”

He jokes: “I can tie up a wedding dress in less than three minutes and know more about wedding planning then any wedding planner. The pictures look really nice also.”

Packages and prices

Packages vary depending on what you’re looking for. “Our packages start at around $1950. We are very flexible when it comes to price and what we offer.”

Bride Cynthia was impressed with 360's prices. “I always believe that you get what you pay for. 360’s prices were right on the money. Great value, great pictures.”

Natasha agrees. “360 was by far the best value for money of the photographers we considered.”

360 offers packages, albums, thank you cards, and quite a bit more. As an added bonus, brides have the option of printing their own pictures. “All of our customers are given, at no extra cost, all of the images unmarked and ready to print. They are edited and colour corrected. We provide them with a letter granting them such permission as well. We encourage our customers to take advantage of the fact that they have the images already, they can print them, themselves.”

All couples automatically land their own online gallery so that once the event has come and gone, they’re able to share the day with their family and friends.

Walking us through it

It all starts with an email. If you live near the office then you will be invited for a meeting. Paul jokes that there is always freshly baked cookies for couples. Yes please!

If you are not available to meet they will work with you over the phone or via email.

Cynthia, who lives in Kitchener, but married in Toronto, was pleased with the service throughout. “He was very accommodating and met us in Timothy’s so that we wouldn’t have to drive in to Toronto.”

As Paul simply puts it: “On your wedding day you get married, we take pictures.”

This is a company that will inspire your artistic side, relax you if you hate having your picture taken and most importantly provide you with stunning pictures of your wedding day that you can hold on to forever.
