How to create a couture-style wedding day look
After many bridal shows, interviews with wedding vendors and meeting thousands of brides over the years, we've come to the conclusion (not surprisingly) that it is the goal of almost every bride to create a unique wedding that reflects her and her fiancé's personalities. But how does one do that with popular trends that others use before you have a chance to, and styles that come and go faster than you can say 'I Do'?
One thing that many brides are doing to make their wedding look unique is finding a dress that truly reflects their style, body and is hopefully not to be replicated. Particularly, we've seen brides drifting towards specialized shops with higher-end, exclusive and custom-made couture attire.
Unless you're part of the fashion world or have a profound knowledge of the terms and trends therein, you may not know what the term 'couture' really means and what kinds of clothing fall into that category. Sure, you've probably heard it used, but what does it mean for clothing to have a couture-style?
Here at The Ring we continually come across this word as it's often used to describe high-end bridal attire, décor and wedding style in general. And while we have a basic grasp on the concept, we thought we would dig a little deeper and give you the inside scoop so you can be in the know, too.
The dictionary definition
Couture (pronounced koo-toor) is, specifically, clothes created or produced by a fashion designer, and if it's not actually designed by a fashion designer then it at least suggests the style and quality of one – i.e. is very fashionable.
Translation…
When we think of couture clothing, we think of the high-end trends fit for the runways of New York and Milan, the streets of Paris, or, closer to home, the fashion district of Toronto. But, we also don't like to typecast, so we were very excited when we found Couture Threads Bridal & Event Dressing even closer to home in the quaint, country-side town of Stratford.
Located at 64 Wellington Street in the town outside of K-W known for its love of Shakespeare and fine dining, the Couture Threads shop itself is new to the fashion world but is run by Owner Rose Schuett who comes with a lifetime love of dressmaking, bridal alterations and fashion and 25 years of experience in sales and marketing.
Rose and her husband, Ed, noticed a lot of stressed out and overwhelmed brides when they were shopping for their daughter's wedding – something they set out to change through simplification, empowerment and a lot of pampering. And who doesn't love pampering?
Fashion designer style and quality…
In our research on couture clothing, we also discovered that it's not enough for the clothes to be high-end and created by a fashion designer, but they're usually custom-made, too. We also have to assume that "fashion designer quality" means using the finest fabrics, laces and materials – something that Couture Threads say they carry in their exclusive collection of bridal gowns.
"Many things in the store can be customized, from altering components of your gown, adding lace trimmings to your veil to changing the colour of crystals in your jewellery," boasts the Couture Threads website. "This allows you to tailor every aspect of the wedding to reflect your personality."
The couture lines found at Couture Threads are Blue by Enzoani, James Clifford Collection, JCH by James Clifford, La Sposa, Paloma Blanca and Mikaella Bridal – and some of these are also available for bridal attendants, mothers and even guests, so everyone can show up in high-style feeling like they're walking down the runway instead of the aisle.
From classic and elegant to sophisticated, sleek and modern, Rose says the collections at Couture Threads were hand-picked to meet a variety of tastes, preferences, personalities and budgets – but one thing stays the same – their website says the gowns are of the finest materials, superb construction and quality workmanship. And we would expect nothing less for attire that falls into the couture category.
The finishing touches…
Of course, a couture look would not be complete without accessories – veils, head pieces, jewellery, purses and more, obviously also designed by the best in the biz. At Couture Threads, this means Alice Hart Couture Millinery, Laura Jayne Couture Veils, Bridal Baubles, VaBien Collection and others.
Couture veiling, heirloom quality headpieces and jewellery and classic purses and gloves are just some of the accessories you can find at Couture Threads to accent your perfect gown.
The couture experience…
We think, if you're going to put on the high-fashion attire then you should also get the high-fashion treatment complete with the atmosphere and service, making you feel like you're living in the lap of luxury.
At Couture Threads, putting a bride on her luxurious pedestal means giving her what they call the Couture Experience – a term they've coined for their effort to offer exceptional customer service. "A Bridal Stylist will tend to your every need and answer any questions you have," says their website.
Picture this – you start with a consultation and light refreshments, then br
owse and select from the bridal collection. You are then given a spacious, private fitting room complete with a robe and elegant viewing area (also known as The 'Glory Room') with seating for whoever you bring along.
If you really want to feel pampered, the private podium viewing room is available by appointment only.
So now, when couture clothing is the topic of conversation at the next cocktail party you're at, you'll know what you're talking about – and you'll know where to find it when you're searching for that perfect, unique dress – somewhere that we were happy to discover is closer than we thought.
