Laura & Steve: Leather, steel, glass & grass - an eclectic wedding day

Several years before Laura Wombwell and Steven Arkle spoke their wedding vows to one another, they both worked in the cast of a renaissance festival in Milton. During their last year working there, while Steve played Rasputin, the Mad Russian, and Laura played a button seller, push from a friend (who ended up being their wedding emcee!) got the two dating, beginning what they assumed was just a summer fling. But, it didn't quite work out that way.

Laura told us that Steve makes her laugh harder than anyone she’s ever met. “I feel the most like myself when I'm with him,” she adds. This matches well with Steve’s love for Laura’s passion for everything she does. “Every pizza she makes for dinner will be the best pizza ever made,” he says. “She applies this to every aspect of her life and it makes living with her an adventure.”

It wasn't one particular moment that had Laura and Steve convinced that they wanted to be together forever, but a collection of little moments. “When we moved in together in our tiny Toronto apartment, when we adopted our dog, when we bought our first house,” Laura says.  “Each step brought us closer to knowing that we were probably stuck with one another for the long haul.”

So, one evening about four years into their relationship, Laura and Steve went out for a nice dinner at Georgian Creed in Guelph. Steve took the ring out of the box and had it ready in his pocket to propose. But, the restaurant was small and crowded and he thought better of it. While walking back to the car after dinner, Steve revised his proposal plans and the couple made a detour over a bridge, which they say is usually a beautiful, quiet spot. That night, however, a big group of kids were gathered there and the air was a bit chilly. So, Laura and Steve went home without a proposal.

Once back in their living room, Steve pulled out the ring box, got down on one knee and, forgetting that he’d put the ring in his pocket at the restaurant, popped the question with an empty box. After digging around in his pocket, Steve pulled out the ring (and a handful of change), and Laura said yes.

Laura and Steve started wedding plans with the mentality that they really wanted it to be a reflection of them. “And we wanted to insert ourselves into a lot of little details,” adds Laura. “From the menu to the flowers to the ceremony, we tried to make sure that our wedding was about us and the people we love.”

Fitting to their style and personalities, Laura and Steve’s theme was eclectic. “We just chose a bunch of things we liked and made them work together,” says Laura. “I guess you'd call it vintage rock & roll.” To get this theme, the couple included elements of leather, steel, glass, and grass, and all of those made up their colour choices, which were mostly black, white and green.

Since both Laura and Steve like the Fall and had their first date together in September, the date was set for September 12, 2009. “Neither of us are sun worshippers and we knew we’d be getting married indoors, so weather wasn’t a huge concern.”
