TOPIC: Photo locations

Photo locations 2 Years, 1 Month ago Karma: 0
We are getting married in June in Heidelberg and we aren't sure where to get our photos taken. There are lots of places in Kitchener that we're aware of, but we were hoping to find something closer (North Waterloo/St Jacobs area)

We would love a beautiful nature setting, perhaps with a unique feature like old ruins. Any indoor suggestions would be great too (not interested in Kitchener City Hall or the Clay and Glass Museum - we want something less modern).

Thanks in advance!

Hi Vanessa,

If/when you have a photographer, they'll likely have some great indoor and outdoor locations for you - especially if they're familiar with this area.

I used to live out near Heidelberg and that area in general is beautiful nature-wise because it's in the country - close to big open fields with rustic barn and house ruins that you can sometimes get away with photographing in front of if you're not trespassing. Heidelberg itself has some cool rustic architecture between the old hotel and churches - same with St. Clements, which is just up the street.

If you'd prefer to go into St. Jacobs or Waterloo, the possibilities are really endless. St. Jacobs has an awesome bridge that's surrounded by nature (trees, water, etc.) and train tracks with an old mill as the backdrop. Even though the town isn't too old, they try to have an old world/antiquey feel so I think a lot of buildings in the area look rustic and not as modern as some of the buildings in Waterloo you mentioned.

That being said, aside from Kitchener City Hall and the Clay & Glass Gallery, among others, Waterloo does have a lot of buildings and areas that are less modern. One of my favourite parts of Waterloo is Waterloo Park, which might have the right amount of nature and rustic architecture you're looking for. Plus, it's really close to Uptown Waterloo that has a bunch of grungey alleys (in a good way) and old buildings (like the Heuther Hotel).

Not sure if you're willing to pay for a photo location, but La Haccienda Sarria is gorgeous and also mixes a bit of nature (both indoors and out) and history. The restored building looks a bit like ruins and has an open top ceiling that brings the outside in (could be your back up location in case of bad weather). Or, there's the covered bridge in Westmount Rose (also a pay per use place).

I'll let you know if I think of any more; but, hopefully this will at least get you thinking about options in the area. Don't forget to ask your photographer, too.

Happy planning!

Head over to Laurel Creek in Waterloo for an afternoon, explore the park and see what you think. There are tons of grass fields and trails filled with tall pines!

Can anyone suggest a photo shoot location in the kitchener-waterloo-cambridge area? Greatly appreciate it.

Hi Teresa,

It really all depends on what you're going for - do you want indoor or outdoor photo locations? Modern, rustic or natural? There are lots of options in the K-W/Cambridge area, you just have to narrow it down to your preference. And, if/when you have a photographer, they'll likely have some great indoor and outdoor locations for you - especially if they're familiar with this area.

Here are some of my personal faves and ones I've heard good things about.

In Waterloo, as mentioned above, there's Laurel Creek and Waterloo Park for more natural, outdoor settings. For modern locations, there's the Clay & Glass Gallery, the Perimeter Institute, and UW. As I also mentioned above, Uptown Waterloo has a bunch of grungey alleys (in a good way) and old, rustic buildings (like the Heuther Hotel).

Kitchener has Rockway Gardens and Victoria Park as its main outdoor venues. Kitchener City Hall offers a great modern backdrop.

I'm not as familiar with the Cambridge area, but I've talked to many wedding vendors who are and they say that Cambridge is known for its historical architecture. Some unique areas in Cambridge are: Mill Race, Blair Village, Queens Square Canon, The Old Post Office, Gore Mutual building and the historic City Hall building, to name just a few. In downtown Galt there's lots of arched bridges, river views and fountains.

I'll let you know if I think of any more; but, hopefully this will at least get you thinking about options in the area. Don't forget to ask your photographer, too.

Happy planning!
